She’s got a Masters in Criminology from going to university in Amritsar, India.

She’s Addi Road’s Office and Venues Manager and the PA to our CEO.

She’s there at our events on weekends and week nights… running the bar, sometimes DJ’ing and helping to set up the sound, often setting up the tables and packing the night down too.

She’s also a mean cook after three years working in kitchens at hotels when she first arrived in Australia, trading criminology for chef work.

She’s Gurwinder Kaur, the best vegetable korma and chickpeas-and-potato-curry maker anywhere from Amritsar India to the heart of Marrickville in Sydney today.

With our usual volunteer cooking squad in disarray due to the Anzac Day break, Gurwinder has jumped in to action to provide what’s needed, taking over solo in our new solar-powered Mess Hall commercial kitchen. It’s been an all-day cooking effort.

Come 4.30pm, Gurwinder has prepared hot meals for some 50 to 70 guests who are anticipated this evening for the Italian Liberation Day celebrations being held inside our Gumbramorra Hall.

Another 80 to a 100 visitors are also expected for our usual Wednesday Night Lights event – where the free hot meals help to warm the hearts of the homeless and others battling as they wait to take advantage of our free wraparound services and partnerships with Street Side Medics, Orange Sky, Marrickville Legal Centre, The Feel Good Project and others.

Basically, inbetween doing her usual day job in the Addi Road office, Gurwinder has improvised under pressure and spent the day cooking up enough food for 150 people or more.

Not a bad effort GK!

There’s some concerns expressed about having enough white rice. Gurwinder holds her hand up dismissively in a stop gesture.
“Do not worry! I’m old school,” she says getting more confident by the minute, waving a wooden spoon about with some authority. “I like my rice light and fluffy. Plenty here!!!”

Simon and Vivianne arrive to pitch in late afternoon as Gurwinder steams ahead. All praise to the Sahlon Village Punjabi Kitchen Cyclone. Hot stuff!!
