Our Site

The Addison Road Community Organisation  is located in Marrickville, in the heart of Sydney’s Inner West, on the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation.

The 3.6 hectares in suburban Marrickville that Addi Road calls home is a special place on Gadigal land. Addison Road as we know it today was originally a dirt track that ran alongside a freshwater creek that flowed through grasslands into the Gumbramorra swamp. With the arrival of British settlers, the site supplied fruit and vegetables to the expanding colon until the Army claimed it as a barracks.

In 1976 the site was dedicated for use as a community centre with the Addison Road Community Organisation as custodian. Today, just over halfway through that 90-year lease with the NSW Department of Crown Lands, we continue to take our role as custodian very seriously.

Who's Here

Addi Road holds the head lease and licences to over 40 artists and community-orientated organisations to generate income to maintain the buildings, grounds and over 170 trees on the site.

Living Museum

The Living Museum forms the basis of our Addi Road’s commitment to documenting the vibrant history of our 3.6 hectare heritage site. From pre-colonisation grazing lands to farmlands to military depot to the birthplace of multicultural Australia, we are preserving Addi Road’s rich history for future generations. The stories this site can tell reflect the major events of our nation, from the appropriation of Aboriginal land to the birth of multiculturalism, with several wars and cultural shifts in between.

Our History

Home to the Gadigal people for over 40,000 years, the land was a dairy and market garden in the mid-nineteenth century; an Army Depot from 1916; a site of protest against military conscription in the 1960s; and a leader in multiculturalism from the 1970s.

Honour Roll For Peace

What do Gough Whitlam, Pemulwuy and the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band have in common? They’re all on the Addi Road Honour Roll for Peace.

The first of its kind in Australia, the Honour Roll for Peace flanks the gates to Addi Road as a public monument to those who have worked for peace, resisted war or fought against the causes of war for a more just and peaceful world.

From activists and artists, to former politicians and soldiers, the range and diversity of those celebrated for their contributions is inspiring and enduring.
