Love is a warm meal for you at a table sitting down, maybe one of your best meals of the week. Love is feeling safe in a group of strangers and thinking it’s how a community should be. Love is sitting playing cards out in the open with friends as daylight saving gives way to the night sky. Love is getting a haircut for free and feeling good about yourself. Love is a donut, like you shouldn’t have two but who cares why not. Love is your dog kissing you. Love is some conversation and company. Love is getting your clothes washed and dried and feeling half-decent again. Love is getting helpful legal advice to deal with a problem that seemed too big for you. Love is just sitting down and not being in a hurry, not being pushed to move along, not hurrying yourself because you’re so used to moving along and rushing you had forgotten how to stay still. Love is a bead of party lights around a table where free food is being served. Love is a machine that measures your blood pressure and a nurse that says “looks okay”. Love is a group of people taking a stupid photograph of themselves. Love is a joke, a spoon, a waft of steam over a cardboard bowl of lentils and vegetables, the moon shining between the trees, a song you hear every week about rising up from being ‘under pressure’. Love is being with people for a while and feeling like a human being.
