Ingredients

  • 500g packet of pasta (not spaghetti)

  • 425g can of tuna, drained

  • 1 medium to large onion, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon pepper

  • 2 cups milk

  • 2 tablespoons plain flour

  • 1 cup grated cheese

  • Extra teaspoon salt

Extras

For a tastier and more nutritious sauce add one or all of:

  • 1 can corn, drained (not creamed corn)

  • 2 zucchinis, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup mushrooms, chopped

Let’s get cooking

Step 1

Turn on the oven and set to 180°C. Grease a medium sized oven-proof dish.

Step 2

Half fill a big saucepan with water and the extra teaspoon of salt. Put the lid on and place the saucepan on the stove. Heat the water until it is boiling. Add the pasta and boil until the pasta is soft (the packet will tell you the time this will take).

Step 3

When the pasta is cooked, drain in a big strainer and set aside.

Step 4

Pour the cooking oil into a fry pan or saucepan and place it over low heat on the stove.

Step 5

When the oil has heated up, add the chopped onions and stir them around the pan until they become soft. Set aside.

Step 6

In a small bowl, add the plain flour, the salt and the pepper to ½ cup of milk. Mix together until there are no lumps. Set aside.

Step 7

Put all the ingredients, except the grated cheese into a large bowl. This includes any of the additional ingredients. Mix together well.

Step 8

Pour the mixture into the oven-proof dish. Spread the grated cheese over the top of the mixture. Put in the pre-heated oven for 45-50 minutes. When it is cooked, the cheese on top should be golden brown.

Dig in while it’s lovely and hot! Yum!
