NEWS RELEASE: Minister for Energy and Environment, Matt Kean to launch Addison Road Community Organisation’s
‘War on Waste’ in Sydney’s Inner West, 11am, this Monday, 18 November 2019.
DETAILS: Addison Road Community Organisation will launch its WOW (War on Waste) Food! Inner West Project at 11am on Monday, 18 November 2019.
Funded by the NSW Government, the WOW project has enabled Addison Road Community Organisation to work more closely with donors, to respond to the needs and challenges around donating surplus food.
It has provided resources to capture these messages in a community engagement campaign to encourage more donors to join. The project also enables relationship building opportunities with other local agencies providing food relief in the Inner West.
Special guests at our WOW launch include the Minister for Energy and Environment, the Hon Matthew Kean MP; the Federal Opposition Leader, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP; and the State Member for Summer Hill, Jo Haylen MP.
Key guests include local business food donors, as well as organisations working in alliance with Addison Road Community Organisation to provide food relief. Customers and volunteers from The Food Pantry, Addi Road’s ‘food rescue and food security supermarket’, will also be present.
Minister Kean has been a driving force behind reducing food waste and a big supporter of Addison Road Community Organisation’s food rescue program. The Minister recently launched a film featuring a day-in-the-life of the Food Pantry. He will be speaking on Monday in support of the WOW (War on Waste) Food! Inner West project.
Rosanna Barbero, CEO Addison Road Community Organisation, said, ”The food justice movement is growing and reshaping how we organise ourselves. Food insecurity is a global issue – it can happen to anyone, and we see it a lot in our community. Addi Road is addressing it locally by rescuing food and diverting it from land fill onto the tables of countless local families every day.”
Addison Road Community Organisation has been a leader in providing quality food to people who need it in the Inner West since opening The Food Pantry in 2015.
“Customers have doubled over the last year to an average of 750+ individuals a week. With two thirds shopping for their families or house-holds, we estimate we are now feeding 1500-2000 people every week through The Food Pantry, associated outreach programs like our mobile food pantry, and our Hilton Hotel Sydney partnership,”Barbero concluded.
The Addison Road Community Organisation Food Pantry currently rescues 1.8 tonnes of food from landfill every week.
FURTHER DETAILS – Launch formalities for WOW end at 12 noon – to be followed by a Community Long Table Lunch for invited guests. Leading politicians, charity and social justice figures, and environmentally engaged business leaders will dine with our Food Pantry customers and volunteers.
Food served at the lunch will be provided by Addison Road Community Organisation’s Food Pantry and our generous donors – including Barilla Australia, Vanella Cheese, The Bread and Butter Project, The Hub, The Ethical Grocer and Maggie May Cafe.
During the launch we will also hear about the War on Waste – and the issues of food security and food rescue in this country – from Federal Opposition Leader, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP; our donor and supporter, Terry Ryan, CEO of Barilla Australia; and Food Pantry customer Katie Maling.
