Pre-colonisation, the river was a freshwater creek and river that flowed through the kangaroo grounds and fed Gumbramorra swamp. The popular Pelican River aka Cooks River is a contested territory historically and today. The river ensured survival. The river was tidal and salty, so these creeks were an important source of fresh water, both for the Aboriginal people and the colony.
The dramatic alteration of the river since colonisation is indicative of the alteration of the Australian landscapes and societies. The rivers remembers the Aboriginal resistance to restricted access to water, movements and food along the river.
